Job description

Sea Kayak Oban is a very small team, and you will need to be able to take on a range of tasks across the business. Particularly during peak season (July & August) we are very busy, and everyone is expected to pitch in wherever they’re needed.

Your primary role will be to run trips, working on a maximum ratio of 1:6. The bulk of them will be half-day trips, though full days and expeditions will also form part of the job. Depending on your qualifications, experience and abilities you may run private instruction sessions, expeditions or courses of 2 or more days. The running of trips / courses will include equipment preparation, care and tidying, loading and unloading trailers, and managing any paperwork associated with the trip / course. With larger groups, you will be working alongside another guide or instructor; depending on relative experience you could be the lead or the second, or you might split things equally between you.

At times when there are not trips or courses running, you may be working in Sea Kayak Oban’s shop, dealing with customers, putting stock on display, packing up orders from the online shop or answering the phone. You will also undertake routine cleaning and maintenance tasks, advise potential customers, and take bookings for trips and courses.

Throughout your time with Sea Kayak Oban, you will have plenty of opportunities for personal development. This could include shadowing, staff training and access to courses. Taking into account the needs of the company, you will have use of any equipment (including kayaks) for personal paddling or training sessions. You will also have access to discounted equipment through our suppliers.

Applicants should note that accommodation in Oban and the surrounding areas can be very hard to find during the summer season, and we would advise you look into what is available at the time of applying for this position.
